Open Access

This collection presents newspapers published in U.S. prisons with special attention to women's-only institutions. These publications depict and report on all manner of life within the walls of prisons, from the quotidian to the upsetting. Incarcerated journalists walk a tightrope between oversight by administration–even censorship–and seeking to report accurately on their experiences inside. Some publications were produced with the sanction of institutional authorities; others were produced underground.

Independent Voices comprises selections from alternative press collections of respected academic institutions across the country. These periodicals were produced by feminists, dissident GIs, campus radicals, Native Americans, anti-war activists, Black Power advocates, Hispanics, LGBT activists, the extreme right-wing press and alternative literary magazines during the latter half of the 20th century.

Lever Press is grounded on a set of values, and guided by clear commitments. The values on which we’re basing our work are producing the highest quality scholarship in an economically sustainable model, embodying and reflecting the values of the liberal arts, and leading the way in establishing best practices for born-digital, peer reviewed, open access monograph publishing.
As a press aligned with the ethos and mission of liberal arts colleges, we seek out, identify, evaluate, and advocate for transformative scholarship that spurs creative dialogue within and between traditional fields of inquiry, emphasizes disciplinary innovation, draws upon new models of collaborative research, and strives to reach the broadest audience possible.
Lever Press titles are made available under Creative Commons (CC) licenses to maximize opportunities for reuse. The particular CC license chosen is up to the author.

The Open Library of Humanities (OLH) is a sustainable scholar-led funding model for Gold Open Access in the humanities without publication fees. Journals are hosted on our in-house open source publishing platform Janeway, enabling it to establish a thriving platform of 28 peer-reviewed open access journals. Its mission is to support and extend open access to scholarship in the humanities - for free, for everyone, for ever. Davidson College supports OLH.

The Open Research Library (ORL). Users can browse and search for Open Access books from various publishers and providers, currently including all Knowledge Unlatched books. Library features Open Access book content worldwide on one platform for user-friendly discovery, offering a seamless experience navigating more than 20,000 Open Access books.

Reveal Digital’s Student Activism collection draws from special collection libraries and archives around the United States. Materials are wide-ranging in nature: Circulars, leaflets, fliers, pamphlets, newsletters, campaign materials, protest literature, clippings, periodicals, bulletins, letters, press releases, ephemera; and meeting, demonstration, conference, and event documentation.

The Documenting White Supremacy and Its Opponents collection includes papers promoting and opposing white supremacy, published mainly in the 1920s. It brings together for the first time local, regional, and national newspapers published by Klan organizations and by sympathetic publishers from across the US. It also includes key anti-Klan voices from newspapers published by American Black, Catholic, and Jewish communities.
