How to Find Videos: Alexander Street Press

How to find streaming videos and DVDs, create playlists and clips, and more

What it is

The Alexander Street Press Academic Video Online collection contains over 70,000 streaming videos, including documentaries, archival footage, public affairs programming, some feature films, and more.

Link to specific videos, segments, or clips

Each video title, segment, clip, and playlist has a unique, stable URL that you can email, add to Word and pdf documents, or post to Moodle. To see the URL, click on the "Embed/Link" button in the control panel just beneath the video screen.

Be sure to use this URL rather than the temporary URL in your brower's address bar.

Create your own clips

It's easy to do! Here's how:

  1. Sign in to your personal account.
Click on "Sign in" in the upper-right hand corner of the page.
  2. Click the  scissors icon in the toolbar just beneath the video pane.
  3.  Enter a title.
  4. Select the sections of your video that you want included.
    You can either:
    • Use the Start/End boxes below the title field to enter or click through start/stop times.
    • Move the green and red rectangles on the timebar to select start and stop times.
  5. Add an annotation ("Notes").
  6. Indicate whether you want others to see your clips ("Visibilty").
  7. Save your clip.

You can then play, link to, or add your clip to a playlist.

  3. Hover over the "See details" of the item(s) that you'd like to add to your playlist, and click on "Playlist."

  4. In the upper left-hand corner of the page, you will see a Menu option, this brings up the Menu Toolbar, Click on "Playlists."

  5. Filter to the option your playlist is filed under-  Just Me, Just my class or group, etc.

  6. You will be given the option to add the item(s) to an existing playlist or to a new playlist.

  7. Indicate whether or not you want others to see your playlist, even if you haven't shared the URL with them.
You can keep your list private by choosing "Just me"; this still gives the option of sharing the stable URL with others. You also have the option of letting others at Davidson automatically see your playlist, or you can have your playlist be visible to everyone who has access to Alexander Street Press collections, at any institution.

  8. Each playlist will have a unique, stable url that you can share with others.
To find the stable url for a specific playlist, view the playlist and click on the "embed/link" option.
You can view all of your playlists by clicking on the "Playlist" menu at the top of the screen.
