Listed below are relevant materials related to race relations in the Town of Davidson and surrounding communities. Materials include student research papers and interviews on these topics, including the Ada Jenkins Center (formerly Davidson Colored School and now a community center). Education 340 (2015) files are the result of research into the history of the Ada Jenkins Center between the closing of the school and the establishment of community center in the 1990s.

The History 353 files are interview logs and final reports from oral history projects. The projects include a history of the Lakeside Terrace neighborhood, the Westside Stakeholders group, the Davidson Fire Department and the Ada Jenkins Center.

Manuscript Collections

Manuscript materials are largely unpublished documents such as diaries, letters, speeches and sermons. The collections may be about an individual, a family, or a group. The majority of our collections relate to students and alumni of Davidson College and to civic organizations in the town of Davidson, North Carolina.

Community Relations Committee, Davidson, NC Records (DC0218s) 

Description: In 1973, the town of Davidson passed an ordinance to establish the "Mayor's Committee on Community Relations." This committee consisted of five members and its responsibilities were to "anticipate, consider and deal with social problems within the community, including but not limited to open housing, fair employment and public accommodations." This collection consists of minutes and correspondence from the committee's active periods.

Davidson College Presbyterian Church Minutes

In 1837, Davidson College Presbyterian Church (DCPC) was founded along with the College and served as the worship place for students, faculty, and local townspeople. Digitized here are the 19th century session minutes and register from DCPC (digitized with permission). Here there might be mention of African-American community members.
