Latinxs in the South: Culture

"Understanding the influence of pay to play soccer on LatinX youth in North Carolina" is an exploratory essay assessing the US youth soccer system's influence on LatinX youth players. In an Interview with the Guardian Doug Andersson, previous chairman of the US Youth Soccer Diversity Task Force stated "it's only working for the white kids" in reference to pay to play soccer. Using numerous sources and two interviews with coaches in North Carolina the essay seeks to understand the relationship of youth soccer and the LatinX community in North Carolina.

“Scene participants use the scene as a cultural tool in various ways. For instance, although it may appear that rock en Español blocks assimilation through an insistence on Spanish-language use, it in fact functions as an efficient resource for upwardly mobile, third-generation Latinos to become American in the twenty-first century by creating a music that conforms to the sensibilities of both cultures."

"[The] Latinx population [is rendered] invisible on a few accounts: underrepresentation of the population, physical invisibility as many Latinxs must live under the radar, and a result of the drive for Latinxs to assimilate fully to U.S. culture. On the flip side, there are a couple distinct forms of visibility of the Latinx population: a hypervisibility through the eyes of U.S. citizens about immigration, and a more positive effort toward visibility through small local endeavors to highlight Latinx culture and uplift their voices. In this paper I present some explanations for the invisibility of the Latinx population and then the same for their visibility."
