How to Find Books

Digital Rights Management and eBooks

What is Digital Rights Management (DRM)?

  • These are services designed to distribute and control the rights to intellectual property in digital form for distribution online. These services use data encryption, digital watermarks, or other methods to prevent content from being distributed in violation of copyright law.

What does this mean for the eBook user?

  • eBooks with DRM limit the amount of the content that can be printed/downloaded/copied/emailed. For example the number of pages in a chapter may exceed the number of pages allowable for downloading in a single day.
  • eBooks with DRM may also limit the number of simultaneous users of an eBook.

What are DRM Free eBooks?

  • eBooks licensed to the library that are free from restrictions on print/copy/download/email limits
  • eBooks that are DRM free are available to an unlimited number of simultaneous users.
