History 287: Memory and Identity in the People's Republic of China

• Video interviews conducted and recorded by filmmakers associated with Wu Wenguang's documentary film studio, Work Station, to document life in rural China during the mid-20th century. This collection contains digital video recordings and transcripts of interviews conducted between 2009 to 2016. Interviewees speak about their experiences living in rural areas during the Great Famine (1958-1961), the Land Reform and Collectivization period (1949-1953), the Great Leap Forward (1958-1960), the Four Cleanups Movement (1964), and the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). Videos are in Chinese without English subtitles, but some interviews have downloadable transcripts in English.

Collection of 10-minute-long video interviews with people who experienced China’s Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) and young people who discuss how they first learned about the Cultural Revolution. Videos are in Chinese with English subtitles.

• A collection of memoirs, photographs, correspondence, and other primary sources from China’s former Rusticated Youth. Videos of oral history interviews are in Chinese, with English subtitles. All written primary source documents are only in Chinese.

This guide provides an overview of open databases and free resources with primary materials for China studies research.
