Strategies for Searching Databases

1) Use Phrase Searching

Search for exact compound concepts by putting them in quotes (e.g. "social stratification")

2) Mine Citations

One way to find source is to identify sources that get cited often across other sources you have found. Read the reference lists to see what shows up.

Google Scholar enables you to see what sources have cited a given source.

Grey literature vs. Traditional Sources

"Grey Literature" include policy papers, working papers, and think tank publications. These sources are called grey literature because they are sometimes hard to locate and have no standard publication process. Because they are not standardized, they lack a vetting process like peer-review, but they often considered authoritative due to the prestige of the groups publishing them.
