eBook Instructions

There are two ways to download the eBooks for your course: Downloading to Adobe Digital Editions (an eReader) or Downloading PDFs of Chapters

If you have any questions about the instructions, make sure to ask a librarian.

Downloading to Adobe Digital Editions

Use these steps to download and checkout books that have long loan periods. For instance, you can download and checkout Markets Over Mao and Beyond the Middle Kingdom for 365 days, which means you can have them checked out for the entirety of your trip. 

The other eBooks, The Third Revolution and China's Political System, can only be checked out for only 21 days. It is better to download these as pdfs of separate chapters, since these files will note expire.

Follow the steps below to learn how to download an eBook and read it on Adobe Digital Editions:

Step 1: Select an eBook

• Open the eBook using the link on the Davidson in China course guide
  • If you are off-campus, you will be prompted to log-in using your Davidson credentials

Step 2: Download the eBook

• Select, "Download Book." This will take you to the online version of the eBook (see picture below)

• Next, click on the "Full Download" Icon on the top of the eBook  (see pictures below)

At this stage, you will be prompted to log-in using your Davidson credentials if you have not yet done so

Step 3: Complete the Download Prompts

After you click the download button, complete the three download prompts:

1. Select the type of device you are using (computer, ios, android, or other)
2. Install Adobe Digital Editions [see Step 4] (Select "Done with this step" if you already have Adobe Digital Editions
3. Select a download period, and click, "Download Your Book" 
   • This will download an .acsm file that can be opened in Adobe Digital Editions
   • The file will automatically expire after the download/checkout period is over

Step 4: Download Adobe Digital Editions

• On the download prompt, select "Download Adobe Digital Editions" or go to the Adobe Digital Editions Download page
• Download Adobe Digital Editions for Mac, Windows or through the Apple store or Google Play
• Select the downloaded file to download Adobe Digital Editions
• Once you open Adobe Digital Editions, you will be asked to authorize your computer with an Adobe ID
  • If you do not have an Adobe ID, you can create one for free on the Adobe ID page

Downloading PDFs of Chapters (Ebook Central)

Use this option for books that have short check-out periods. By downloading the chapters as separate PDFs you will have permanent versions of the texts, and will not have to worry about them expiring mid-trip.

Step 1: Select an eBook

• Open the eBook using the link on the Davidson in China course guide
  • If you are off-campus, you will be prompted to log-in using your Davidson credentials

Step 2: Select Download PDF Chapter

• Select "Download PDF Chapter"

• Next, select "Download PDF" button for the chapter you want to download

• A pop-up window will appear that says your download is complete. Click on the "Download" button
  • This will download a pdf file of the chapter

Step 3: Repeat for Relevant Chapters

• You may reach a daily limit on how many chapters you can download during a browser session. If this happens, the limit will reset after 24 hours. Plan downloading these ahead of time, because it may take multiple days to download the book.
• The daily limit will reset if you sign-in to Ebook Central 

Note: If you would like to use Adobe Digital Editions to read the chapter PDFs, you can drag the file into Adobe Digital Editons.

Downloading PDFs of Chapters (Project Muse)

One of the books for this course, Networking China: The Digital Transformation of the Chinese Economy, is available through Project Muse. You will need to download the Introduction, Conclusion, and Chapter Three.

To download these chapters, follow these instructions:

Step 1: Select the eBook

• Open the eBook using the link on the Davidson in China course guide
  • If you are off-campus, you will be prompted to log-in using your Davidson credentials

Step 2: Download the Relevant Chapter

• Under the chapter you want to download, select "Download." This will open up a PDF Reader in your Browser
• In the PDF Reader, select the download icon or right-click/control click and select "save as..." to save as a pdf

Note: If you would like to use Adobe Digital Editions to read the chapter PDFs, you can drag the file into Adobe Digital Editons.
