Davidson College volunteers execute the first phase of the outdoor art installation by Nicholas Galanin, a Tlingit and Unangax̂ artist from Alaska. The next phase of the year-long process will take place this month, when volunteers return to prepare the soil for spring planting.
Davidson College and the Catawba Nation have entered into a multi-year partnership, Dúta Bahiisere Kus Ráˀhere (We Know Corn Together), involving the Catawba Indian Nation and the faculty, staff, and students of Davidson College. Members of the college and Catawba communities routinely collaborate on art installations and exhibitions, educational events hosted on campus and on the Catawba reservation, and research focused on Indigenous food sovereignty, sustainability, and history, toward the goal of forging a reciprocal relationship.
