Accessing Financial Data

Exporting your Data for your ECO 105 or ECO 205 Projects

ECO 105:

Step 1: Narrow your data to under 5,000 rows

If you have more than 5,000 rows, chose a term and export in multiple steps. Using the date is often helpful here, just pay careful attention to make sure you do not omit a data point around where you are switching.

Step 2: Export data to Microsoft Excel using the small green box in the upper right hand corner.

Again, if you have more than 5,000 data points, then do this part in multiple steps. It will likely export to multiple tabs on excel. It is then relatively easy to copy and paste to the first tab to compile one data set.

Step 3: Remember to save your excel file and share it with yourself so that you can access it on your personal computer later. Dropbox, Google Drive or Email are all good options for this.

ECO 205:

Step 1: Export to Microsoft Excel (see ECO 105 section above)

Step 2: Copy all data and paste into Data Editor window in STATA

Step 3: Save your data into STATA using a .dta file

You can export balance sheets, quarterly reports, company overviews, and other data to Excel. The picture below demonstrates what exported data may look like:
