Printers, Illustrators, Publishers

The Golden Cockerel Press was known for some of the important owners, and illustrators of the time, including owners Robert Gibbings, Eric Gill and Christopher Sandford, and illustrator, John Buckland-Wright.

Robert Gibbings

Robert Gibbings, (1889-1958) was born in Cork, Ireland.  An artist and author, he was owner of The Golden Cockerel Press from 1924 - 1933.  Some of the finest books from the press were printed during his ownership including the Four Gospels (1931) and the Canterbury Tales (1929-1931).

Eric Gill

Eric Gill (1882-1940) was an English sculptor, typeface designer, printer.  His collaboration with Robert Gibbing at the Golden Cockerel Press resulted in some of the most beautiful books produced by the press, and some of the most valued by collectors, including the Four Gospels, and The Canterbury Tales.

John Buckland Wright

John Buckland Wright (1897-1954) was born in New Zealand, but spent most of his life in London.  He was a self-taught painter, etcher and engraver, and was the illustrator of many of the best works from the Golden Cockerel Press including Endymion, Pasiphaë, and The Grecian Enchanted.

Christopher Sandford

Christopher Sandford (1902-1983) was a book designer and one of the owners of the Golden Cockerel Press.  Thomas Gray's Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard was produced under his editorship.
