Bibles in the Rare Book Room

The Rare Book Room houses a collection of Bibles dating from 1250 to the mid-20th century.

Luther Bible

Biblia: das ist de gantze heilige Schrifft Alten und Neuen Testaments deutsch / D. Martin Luther.   Amsterdam, Heinrich Wetstein, 1686.

The "Luther Bible" is a German language Bible, translated from Hebrew and ancient Greek by Martin Luther, and was the first full translation of the Bible into German based on the original Hebrew and Greek rather than from the Latin Vulgate.  The New Testament was first published in 1522, and the complete Bible in 1534.

Our copy, from 1686, is bound in black morocca with gilt tooling on the spine and covers. The end papers are marbled, and the edges are gilt.
