Bibles in the Rare Book Room

The Rare Book Room houses a collection of Bibles dating from 1250 to the mid-20th century.

King James Bible - 1614

The Holy Bible: containing the Old Testament and the New / newly translated out of the original tongues; and the former translations diligently compared and reuised, by His Maiesties speciall commandment.  Imprinted at London: By Robert Barker, 1614.

Probably the most well known translation of the Bible, the King James Version was commissioned in 1604 under King James VI of England, and was published in 1611.  It has been noted for its beautiful language and style.  By the mid-18th century the KJV had become the English translation most used in both Anglican and English Protestant churches.  By the beginning of the 19th century, it became the most widely printed book in history.

Our copy, dated 1614, is printed in 2 columns.  The title lies within a woodcut border with a hear-shaped center.  Given to the library by Wilbur L. Fugate, it contains extensive marginalia in Latin, Greek, and English, with references to other Bible verses and classical works.
