Udall Scholarship Resource Guide: Search Tips

Search Tips

Most of the databases listed on this guide contain options for filtering and refining your search results. Below are some tips for making the make the most of your searches.

Look For Advanced Search

Look for an Advanced Search option in each database. Typically Advanced Search provides the most control for structuring your searches.

Refine by Source Type

Some of our databases contain multiple source types (i.e. books, journal articles, and magazine articles). To refine to just one or a select few, choose what is relevant in advanced search or in the left-hand side menu.

Search By Author Name

An author search ensures you retrieve items in your search results authored by Morris or Stewart Udall, not items written about them by other authors. Typically this option is available in advanced search. Using the boolean OR you can retrieve items authored by Morris or Stewart Udall in the same set of results. For instance, in our library catalog you can format a search like this:

Author/creator (is exact) Udall, Stewart L.
OR
Author/creator (is exact) Udall, Morris K.

Filter By Subject

Typically in a Refine or Filter column on the left-hand side of your search results, Subject options can help you quickly process your search results by category. For instance, in our library catalog, subjects associated with an author search for Morris or Stewart Udall include Alaska, Land Use, and Water Resources. Clicking on one of these options will filter your results to the items associated with that particular subject.
